Grass Valley, California · Weddings and gatherings

A lawn under old trees.A house with a long view.Yours for the day.

A private property in the Sierra foothills above Grass Valley, opening for weddings and gatherings. Ceremony in the meadow, dinner on the lawn, the house in between.

  • Grass Valley, California
  • Nevada County, Gold Country
  • Ceremony and reception, one address

The Place

Room to gather, above the valley.

A mid-century ranch on a bench of land above Grass Valley, with a park of a lawn spreading west under oaks and cedars, a meadow beyond it, and the ground falling away downhill behind the house. It is a property, not a hall. The day moves across it.

Ceremony in the meadow. Dinner on the lawn under a tent. The house for getting ready and for the quiet hour after. The grounds for whoever wanders off. Book it and it is held for you, and we plan the day around what will be finished by then.

The Grounds

Five places, one address.

  1. The Lawn

    Tent and reception

Rendering of the sailcloth tent on the lawn at blue hour with lit long tables (portrait crop)
    Rendering, planned

A flat park of a lawn under oaks, ponderosas and deodar cedars, fenced in post and rail. Room for a tent, a long table, a band, a floor to dance on. Shade at noon, gold light at six. Dinner is the point here. The rest of the property holds the ceremony and the wandering.

  2. The Meadow

    Ceremony

Rendering of the ceremony aisle at blue hour with string lights and a wooden arbor (portrait crop)
    Rendering, planned

West of the lawn the ground opens into a meadow. Cured grass in late summer, cedars along one side, and past the fence a red silo on the neighboring land. It is not ours. We borrow the view. Set the chairs to face it and the ceremony has a landmark behind it that nobody had to build.

  3. The House

    Great room and porch

Rendering of the covered back porch looking over the meadow to the pine ridge (portrait crop)
    Rendering

A mid-century ranch, mint siding under a rust-red roof, a fieldstone wall along the front. At the back, the great room opens through a wall of small panes onto a covered porch and a long view downhill. Get ready here. Or take the quiet hour before the toasts, door shut, light coming through the glass.

  4. The Bar

    Planned

Rendering of the planned bar with glass doors folded open at the east end of the house at dusk (portrait crop)
    Rendering, planned

On the east end of the house sits a former garage, walled in years ago. The plan is to open it again with a glass door onto the courtyard and make it the bar: a cool room for the hour after the ceremony, glass and stone, drinks carried out into the evening. Not built yet. Ask us where it stands.

  5. The Grounds

    Paths, trees, the gate

Rendering of a planned seating pocket with teak benches under a deodar cedar (portrait crop)
    Rendering, planned

Deodar cedars in a grove. A line of fruit trees along the back. Decomposed granite paths through silver, drought-planted beds, and roses climbing against the cedars. Past the garden, a plateau with the valley laid out below it, and a second gate under the ponderosas. Enough ground that guests drift. Enough shape that they come back.

The Vision

What is here, and what is coming.

The lawn, the meadow, the house and the grounds are here now. Some of what we picture is not: a bar behind a glass door where the garage was, a pool in the bump-out off the great room, rows of vines planted for the look of them, seating pockets in the shade of the trees. We will tell you plainly, at any point, which is which. Book early and you book a property in motion, and we plan the day around what will be finished by then.

    The bar

  • Planned

    The pool

Quiet dark water in the bump-out off the great room.

  • Planned

    Vineyard rows

Vines along the plateau, planted for the look of them.

Benches under the cedars and along the paths.

Practicalities

Grass Valley, California.

The property is in Grass Valley, in Nevada County, in the Gold Country on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. Close enough to Sacramento for a day trip, far enough that the air changes on the drive up. Downtown Grass Valley and Nevada City are close, with inns, restaurants and the old brick storefronts. The Bay Area and Tahoe are within a morning's drive.

Is the property open for events now?

We are taking inquiries now. Tell us your date and we will tell you plainly what will be finished by then, and what will not.

Can we hold the ceremony and the reception here?

Yes. The meadow for the ceremony, the lawn for dinner and dancing, the house and grounds in between. Reception-only days work too.

How many guests can you host?

That depends on the layout and the tent, and we would rather answer it for your list than post a number. Send the count in your inquiry and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

Do you provide the tent, furniture or catering?

Tents, furniture, catering and bar service are brought in for each event by vendors of your choosing. We walk them through the property beforehand.

Can we come and see it?

Yes. Send the form and we will arrange a walk of the grounds, including the honest tour of what is finished and what is planned.

Where do guests stay?

Grass Valley and Nevada City have inns, small hotels and rentals nearby. The property is not a hotel.
